A whole-house fan is designed to pull in outdoor air through your open windows. At the same time, indoor air is exhausted through the attic. While this is helpful when the outdoor air is cool and clean, it isn’t as safe when the air is polluted by wildfire smoke, high pollen counts, smog, and dust on days with a high air quality index (AQI).

  • High-Use Rooms: The best location is in a space where you and your family spend most of your time. For example, bedrooms, living rooms, offices, additions, and converted spaces are popular locations.

Keep the Unit Away From Obstructions

For the best airflow and comfort, it’s important to keep the unit away from anything that could obstruct or block it.

Avoid Furniture, Curtains, and Shelving

The unit should never be installed behind tall furniture, curtains, shelving, or wall decor. If the airflow is blocked, it can create hot and cold spots in the room. Instead, there should be proper clearance around the top, sides, and front of the unit.

Avoid Tight Corners

Corners can limit the distribution of air. Because of this, we generally recommend placing the unit in a central location on the wall and not in a tucked-away spot.

You should never install the unit above heat sources. Ovens, televisions, computers, and strong lighting can cause the temperature sensor to have an inaccurate reading, leading to inefficient indoor temperatures. The unit should not be in a location that receives direct sunlight for extended periods of time.

Do Not Aim Airflow Directly at People

Similarly, the mini-split unit should be set up so that it doesn’t blow air directly onto a bed, sofa, desk, dining table, or crib. For bedrooms, this means the airflow should be aimed at a walkway instead of the bed. Meanwhile, airflow in the living room should not be focused on seating areas. Finally, avoid aiming the airflow at the table in your kitchen or dining room.

Should a Mini-Split Go in a Hallway?

Hallways are not ideal for mini-split placement because the conditioned air may not reach adjacent rooms evenly. Additionally, the unit will read the hallway temperature instead of the room where your family is actually located. Instead of a hallway placement, we recommend putting units in the rooms where people spend the most time.

What About Large Rooms or Open Floor Plans?

If you have a large room or open floor plan, the unit’s location should be chosen so that it serves the whole area. You’ll need to consider the shape of the room, furniture layout, ceiling height, and sunlight exposure. Often, we find that multi-zone systems work best when you are trying to condition large spaces, multiple rooms, or areas with vaulted ceilings.

Plan for Drainage, Lines, and Maintenance

When the indoor unit is cooling, it will produce condensation. Condensate drainage lines are needed to transfer this moisture out of your home. Because of this, exterior wall installations tend to be much simpler. If you install the unit on an interior wall, you may need a condensate pump or a longer line to remove condensate.

Your ductless mini-splits should receive a fall and spring tune-up. In between, you’ll need to change the filter and perform routine maintenance tasks. Because of this, the unit should be located where it is easy to reach.
